Its land is divided into two large geographical regions. On the western lies the Magdalena River valley, a mostly flat area with an average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. The eastern side is home to the mountainous region of the eastern cordillera (mountain range) where the spectacular Chicamocha canyon is located. The economy is based on agriculture, but it is quickly being surpassed by industries like cement production, textiles, processed food and metallurgy. The Magdalena River is used to transport most of their products all over the country. Santander coffee growers are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity that is mainly determined by differences in land size, the family helps in the labor in the coffee farms, type of economy, production systems used, environmental awareness and the adoption of technology. This particular lot is from 41 producers (see attached factsheet for names) with an average of 12 hectares of coffee-growing land
