Sara Castillo inherited her farm—El Crucero, meaning, "at the crossroad"—from her father, 33 years ago. She’s had health issues, though, and hasn’t been able to maintain it. When we met her last year, she was supporting herself by selling vegetables in the market and was looking to sell the farm. Our team in Hueheutenango saw the poor condition of the farm, but also its location and potential and asked if she’d like to make it a Volcafe Way model farm, and she happily accepted. And what a year it has been! Sara is an amazing producer who continues to fight for her farm. She's very conscious of quality and the improvements she needs to make to have not only great quality but strong production.
